Glossary of Key Terms

A quick reference to the core terminology you will encounter when using Provenance.

The Provenance Framework

Provenance Framework The data standard at the heart of Provenance. It is a collection of 50+ sustainability claims and certifications, organised across five Impact Themes, that brands can use to communicate their social and environmental impact. The Framework is continuously developed with internationally recognised partner organisations to meet evolving standards and regulatory requirements.
Proof Point A verified, structured sustainability claim about a brand or a product. Proof Points connect what a brand says to real evidence or independent verification. They are the building blocks of your Provenance profile and appear as clickable badges on your product pages and retail channels.
Trust Badge The embeddable widget that displays your Proof Points on your product pages.
Brand Proof Point A Proof Point that applies to the brand as a whole rather than to a specific product. Examples include B Corporation, Female-Led Business, or Living Wage Employer. Brand Proof Points appear across all of your products.
Product Proof Point A Proof Point that applies to individual products rather than the entire brand. Examples include Vegan, Partly Recyclable Packaging, or Organic Ingredients. Product Proof Points are assigned to specific products, so your full range does not need to meet the criteria.
Evidence-based Claim A type of Proof Point designed to fill communication gaps where a brand or product is not certified. Claims are awarded when a brand has met substantiation requirements set by the Provenance Framework, or has had the claim verified by an approved verification partner.
Certification-based Claim A type of Proof Point awarded by a recognised third-party organisation (such as B Corp, Fairtrade, or Leaping Bunny Cruelty-Free) that has independently assessed a brand or product against its own standards.
Impact Theme The five categories used to organise claims and certifications within the Provenance Framework: Climate, Nature, Waste, Workers, and Communities. Impact Themes help brands and shoppers understand which areas of social and environmental impact a Proof Point relates to.

Evidence & Verification

Evidence The documentation a brand submits to support a Proof Point. Evidence requirements vary by claim and are detailed in the Provenance Framework. Common examples include certificates, audit reports, supplier declarations, and lab test results.
Integrity Team The team at Provenance responsible for reviewing submitted evidence against Framework criteria. If your evidence credibly demonstrates that all requirements have been met, the Integrity Team will approve your Proof Point for publishing.
Third-Party Verification An additional level of assurance where an approved, independent verification partner reviews and confirms a claim on behalf of the brand. Some Proof Points require third-party verification; for others, it is optional but recommended.
Proof Point Status The current stage of a Proof Point in the review process. Key statuses include: Needs Evidence (awaiting your submission), Validation in Progress (being reviewed by the Integrity Team), Approved (live and published), and Action Needed (requires your attention before it can progress).
