COMMUNITIES: Clinically Tested

Check if the Clinically Tested Proof Point is applicable to your business

The "Clinically Tested" Proof Point signifies that a beauty or cosmetic product has undergone independent clinical trials on humans in a controlled laboratory environment to assess its safety and performance. This is distinct from the โ€œScientifically Testedโ€ Proof Point which does not involve testing on human participants.

What are the key criteria?

  • Clinical Trial Environment: The product must have been tested in a controlled laboratory setting.
  • Supervision: The test should be supervised by a dermatologist or qualified medical/scientific personnel.
  • Beyond Legal Requirements: The testing must exceed legally mandated assessments, such as product stability or basic safety tests like the Human Repeat Insult Patch Test (HRIPT).

Product Scope: This Proof Point applies exclusively to beauty and cosmetic products; it does not extend to food and beverage items, including supplements.

What evidence is required?

To substantiate the claim, a laboratory report is required, which should include:

  • The product name.
  • Details including the test duration, number of subjects involved, and other relevant conditions.
  • Key findings from the clinical trial.

This evidence will be made publicly available to ensure transparency so please ensure that any confidential or sensitive information is redacted before uploading.

What is not accepted?

Tests that are legally required, such as standard product stability assessments or basic safety evaluations like HRIPT for non-irritation and/or dermal sensitisation on a standard population, are not sufficient for this Proof Point. The clinical testing must go beyond these mandatory requirements to qualify.

What may be accepted?

Clinical Allergy Testing Beyond Basic Safety

This may be non-irritation tests carried out on a particular population e.g. sensitive skin. They may also be tests carried out to support a hypoallergenic claim.

Efficacy-Focused Clinical Trials

Efficacy-focused dermatological clinical trials assess whether a cosmetic product delivers on its promised benefits, such as improved hydration, reduced wrinkles, or enhanced skin clarity. These trials are conducted under controlled conditions, often overseen by dermatologists or scientific experts.
